Creating Quick Pullout/Breakout Classes at Rostered Districts: Clever, ClassLink, and Edlink
Creating Quick Pullout/Breakout Classes at Rostered Districts: Clever, ClassLink, and Edlink
To create pullout or breakout classes, your organization must be actively sharing
teacher and student account data with Sirius
Online through Clever, ClassLInk or Edlink —or must have successfully shared this data in the past.
Initial Setup Requirement: To sync student
accounts for the first time, each student must be linked to at least one active
class and teacher in your roster data.
Many districts have already completed this step!
New to Rostering for Sirius This Fall: If
you are just getting started, you will need to assign all participating pullout or
breakout students to at least one master class. This ensures they are
provisioned correctly in Sirius and can be rostered using the new method.
Watch the Administrator or Teacher video—whichever matches your role—for a quick overview of how to create pullout classes.

Self-Registered
Class Creation for Rostered Districts
Administrators
and teachers in districts using Clever, ClassLink, or Edlink will be able to
manually create session-based pullout or breakout classes within Sirius Online. These classes are built
on existing rostered student accounts and offer flexible support for
specialized instruction.
This
feature marks a major advancement—enabling schools and districts to quickly set
up and manage accelerated instruction groups or other targeted learning
sessions with ease. Classes can be created on demand and maintained for any
desired duration, giving educators greater control over instructional planning
and student support.
Available to Automated Rostered Districts Only: Districts that share rosters via Clever, ClassLink, or Edlink will
gain access to a new feature allowing the creation of self-registered
classes—ideal for summer programs, pullout groups, breakout sessions,
Accelerated Learning sections, and more.
Requires Rostered Users & single sign-on (SSO): Teacher and student access will continue through existing SSO
providers. Only users who are rostered and shared via the district’s rostering
service can be included in these self-registered classes.
Supplemental to Existing Rosters: This feature
is in addition to the formal rosters, classes, and sections already synced from
the district’s Student Information System (SIS). It provides added flexibility without disrupting existing data flows.
District administrators can create pullout classes for students
assigned to a single school within the district.
At this time, Sirius does not
support cross-school class creation—meaning classes that include students from
multiple schools cannot be built using standard rostered data.
For these multi-school scenarios,
such as summer programs or district-wide breakout sessions, please use a
self-registration instance, which is commonly used for flexible scheduling
outside the regular academic calendar.
Other
Considerations
Similar to self-registration
model used in certain districts, administrators and teachers can create classes
using only pre-existing students already present in the district’s shared data.
New students or teachers cannot be
added manually. Only users included in the data received from Clever,
ClassLink, or Edlink are eligible for inclusion.
Class
Management Capabilities for Admins and Teachers
Admins
and teachers have the ability to create and edit the following class details:
Class Name
Start Date
End Date
Associated School Building (if
multiple campuses are available)
Linked Programs (as currently
supported)
Additionally,
co-teachers in rostered districts can continue to use Self-Registration to join and support classes. This includes the
ability to participate in multiple classes as needed.
Districts have
consistently requested the ability to create flexible instructional groups—such
as pullout or breakout classes—across multiple schools. With this new feature,
Sirius empowers districts to deliver targeted learning experiences to students
who need them most, without being limited by formal class schedules or standard
rostering protocols through Clever, ClassLink, or Edlink.
This enhancement
streamlines support for accelerated instruction, enrichment programs, and other
specialized engagements—making it faster and easier to respond to evolving
student needs.
Creating
Pullout/Breakout Classes in Rostered Districts
Administrators and
teachers in districts using Clever, ClassLink, or Edlink can easily create
non-SIS-based classes—such as pullout or breakout sessions. These flexible
class creation options allow educators to support specialized instruction
outside of standard SIS rosters, enabling quick setup for summer programs,
intervention groups, or accelerated learning sections.
District
and School Administrators
District
administrators have the ability to create classes across any school within
their district using Sirius. School administrators
and teachers, however, are limited to creating classes and adding students only
from their assigned schools.
Log in to Sirius Online and
click the Users tab.
Search for the teacher who
will serve as the ‘Primary Teacher’ of your new class or pullout. Be sure
to use the header filters to quickly locate a specific teacher.
Once you locate the teacher for whom you will add a class, click the View button.
On the Teacher profile screen,
click +Add/Join Class at the
bottom.
Enter a Class Name, along with the Start Date and End Date.
To ensure teachers have time to finalize grades and wrap up instructional
tasks, it's recommended to set the End Date a few weeks after the last
scheduled day of class.
Once your new class is
created, it will appear in your Teacher
Profile. To begin adding students from your district’s shared roster
(via Clever, ClassLink, or Edlink), click the View button next to the newly added class.
Administrators can only add currently shared students in your rostered
data. They cannot self-register students outside of the rostered method.
Click the +Add Existing Student button.
When you locate the student you would like
to add, click the Add button.
Success! The student has been
added to your class. Repeat the same process for each additional student
who should be included. To verify that all students have been successfully
added, navigate to the Roster
Screen and review your class list.
Teachers
Teachers can create
their own classes by following a process similar to the one used by
administrators.
On the teacher’s dashboard—where
primary class rosters from Clever, ClassLink, and Edlink are
displayed—teachers can initiate a pullout or breakout session by clicking +Add/Join Class.
Enter Class Details: Provide the following information to set up your new class.
Class Name: Follow your district’s naming
conventions, especially for specialized sessions like Accelerated Instruction
pullouts or breakouts.
Start Date: It is recommended to set the start
date slightly before students begin using the course to allow for setup and
early access.
End Date: Choose an end date that extends at
least two weeks beyond the final day of student activity. This gives teachers
time to complete grading and evaluations.
School Selection: If you are affiliated with
multiple schools, use the Drop-down Menu to select the appropriate school for the new class.
After creating the class,
click +Add Existing Student to
begin adding students.
Use the search function to
locate and add each student who should be included.
Review the Roster Screen to confirm that all
intended students have been successfully added.
If a co-teacher is not listed in your district or school data, they
can still join the class using the Self-Registration feature.
