Student Assessment Tools: Quick Guide

This guide offers a concise overview of the tools students can access while completing assessments. Each section highlights key features designed to support navigation, comprehension, and performance.

Overview of Course Features


Tool

Select Back to return to the previous question or screen.

Select Next to move to the next question or screen.

Select Go To to jump directly to a different question or screen.

When you see this icon in the lower corner of the screen, you need to scroll down the page to see more content.


 Course and Lesson Tools

Instructions

Select Instructions to see any special instructions your teacher may have given you.

Select References to view reference sheets.

Reference sheets may include formulas, conversions, and other helpful information.

Select a word, then select the Dictionary to find the definition of the word. You can also type a word in the box and select Search to find the definition.

Select Calculator to open the on-screen calculator.

Some courses provide a graphing calculator, and others provide a basic calculator.

Select Ruler to display the on-screen ruler.

Select the button again to hide the ruler.

You can drag the ruler to where you want it on the screen.

To rotate the ruler, drag the  icon.

Select Graph/Draw to open the on-screen graph and draw tool.

Select the tool icons at the top of the Graph/Draw window to draw objects on the graph. Point to each tool icon to see what it does.

When the screen is divided vertically, you can expand either side of the screen to use the full screen width. To expand the question side of the screen, select the left arrow on the Expander. To expand the passage side of the screen, select the right arrow on the Expander.

Language Tools

Select some text, then select the Translate button to translate that text to another language. Use Settings to select the language. 

The Translate tool is not available when you take a test. Teachers may also turn Translate on or off.

Select Speak to show the Speech toolbar.

Teachers may turn Speech on or off.

Select words or images that have a box around them to see pop-up Content and Language Supports.

These pop-ups have words or pictures that may help you.

Teachers may turn Content and Language Supports on or off.

Spell Check

Spell Check
will underline words that are misspelled as you type a written response. You can click an underlined word to see a list of suggested replacements.

Teachers may turn Spell Check on or off.

Item Tools

Instructions

Select Line Reader to highlight a line of text as you read.

When a reading passage is displayed, there will be separate Line Readers available for the question and the passage.

To cross out an answer choice in multiple choice and multiple select questions, select Strikethrough.

Then select each answer choice you want to cross out. Select Strikethrough again to turn the tool off.

To highlight text in a question or reading passage, first select Highlight. The Highlight Options toolbar appears.

Select a color, then select some text on the screen to highlight it.

To change the color of text you already highlighted, click the text and choose one of the other colors.

To underline text, Select .

To draw a box around text, Select .

To delete a highlight, click the highlighted text and then select .

To hide your highlights, select Highlight again. You can turn your highlights on and off using Highlight

The Highlight tool and the Speak tool cannot be used at the same time.

To type notes or comments on a question, select Sticky Notes. Then select some text on the screen where you want to attach the note. Type your note, then select Save. A black rectangle will appear to show you where the note is attached.

Select Sticky Notes again to turn the tool off and hide your notes.

To edit a note you made before or to add a comment to it, select Sticky Notes and then select the black rectangle where the note is attached. The note will appear, and you can select Edit to change it.

To type text that will be available on all screens in an assignment, select Notepad. Type your note, then select Save.

Select Notepad again to turn the tool off and hide your text.

Select Mark for Review to flag a question for review later. The flag icon will turn red. You will also see a red flag on the item in the Go To menu and on the Summary screen at the end of the activity. 

Select Mark for Review again to remove the red flag.

System Tools

Select Help to display this help article.

Select Settings to change the text size, text color, settings for Text to Speech, or the language for Translation.

Select Exit to leave the test or activity. Your work will be saved.

Text-to-Speech Toolbar

Select Speak to show the Speech toolbar. Drag the blue bar at the top to move the Speech toolbar to another place on the screen.

Text-to-Speech Tool

Instructions

Select the Click to Speak tool to start speaking at a particular place. Then click or tap a sentence.

Your device will start speaking the text from that sentence. It will continue until the end of the screen or until you select Pause or Stop Speaking.

Select Play to have your device read all the text on the screen starting from the beginning.

Select Pause to pause the reading of text. Select Pause again to resume reading from the place you paused.

Select Stop to stop the reading of text.
