This resource covers scoring of
activities in practice mode, the saving of responses, reassignment of work to
students on individual assignments, and some notes about manual scoring of
items.
How
Student Scores Are Tracked in Practice and Feedback Mode
Purpose of Practice Activities
Designed to promote learning through
multiple attempts, with the goal of students arriving at the correct answer by
using feedback and hints.
How scoring works:
- Only the first response a student
submits for each item is recorded in the scorecard and reports.
- Even if a student
eventually selects the correct answer after several tries, that success is not reflected in the recorded score.
- The system
currently does not track or report the
final (correct) response—only the initial attempt is captured behind the
scenes.
A Common Concern
Educators and administrators may interpret
these results in students misunderstanding the material, when in reality,
students may have reached the correct answer after engaging with the feedback
loops as intended.
Students Need to Submit Work
or Save Work Before Exiting
To ensure a smooth experience on Sirius Online, students should either Submit their work for teacher review or Save for Later before ending their
session. To do this, at the bottom of
each assessment, click the Go To button and scroll all the way to the right
to see the button with Review/End.
On the following screen, the student will
have the option to perform either action.
This helps preserve their progress and
ensures that scoring and feedback function as intended.
Responses Not Saving
If student responses
don’t appear to be saving, have them clear their browser cache, restart their
device, and relaunch the browser before continuing the activity.
In most cases, this
resolves the issue and allows them to resume work without data loss.
If problems continue after these steps,
please contact support for further assistance.
Reassign Work Directly from
the Scorecard Summary Screen
If Step 3 does not resolve the problem of student's responses saving,
reassign the activity for the affected student.
To do this:
- Navigate to your
assignment’s scorecard summary by locating the assignment and clicking Score.
- In the Submitted column, roll over the
submission date next to the student’s name.
- This will reveal the Reassign button for that individual student.
Clicking it will allow the student to
complete the activity again.
Open-Response Questions
For open responses that require manual
scoring, a scoring panel with a Points field appears to the right of the
response.
Not all practice open responses
need to be scored—for example, end-of-assignment student reflections. However,
you’ will still have the option to add comments or provide feedback for students
in these cases.
To view only items
that may require manual scoring, use the Only show manually Scored Items toggle in the upper toolbar.
When reviewing an entire assignment, it’s
usually best to switch this toggle off so you can see all student responses.
Scoring Items
To
score an item, enter the number of points (usually up to 1) in the Points
field.
Need
to give additional feedback to the student?
- Type your message in the Teacher Comment field.
- Click Save to record the score, the comment, or both.
